Animal protection in Europe
Who has taken holidays in southern and Eastern Europe knows it: the uncountable numbers of roaming and put out dogs and cats on the beach or the streets, who must live from refuse. Mostly ignored, quietly tolerated, but often enough as disturbing and bothersome, sooner or later to be poisoned or shot.
What happens with these ,,unloved’’ animals? In south European country’s animal home’s are very rare. Animals are used as objects or toys. At this point one remembers the vast amount of hunting dogs which after the hunting season are ,,sorted’’ out and dispersed with which means left in remote area’s to be left to their terrible destiny.
Of cause not everyone has this view of our fellow creatures in these countries. But sorry to say often the local authorities are unbelievably unconcerned about the animals. Animal protection in all of Europe still hasn’t the same conditions. Found animals will be taken to municipal collecting stations (Perreras) and will be kept up to maximum 21 days and then killed. This terrible situation is not just in south but in the mean time also becoming well known in Eastern Europe, where the stray dogs are caught and brutally beaten and killed by the dog catchers.
Many animal protectors, often foreigners, take great pains to save the individual animals. They take the discarded, thrown out and the sentenced to death animals, nurse them back to health and give them into good hands. This of cause is not possible in the country or origin, because nobody wants them.
International animal protection society Grenzenlos e.V.
We have ascertained that all work and time spent and financial means are scarce, but luckily enough there are people who are interested in this work and prepared to help. Because of this we have founded charitable international animal protection society Grenzenlos e.V.
That has the misery of animals in other countries to do with us in Germany you may ask. In Germany there are lots of ownerless animals, you are right. But our opinion is that Europe is growing and the animal protection should not stop at the borders. All over the world animals need people who are ready to help them. Ownerless strays
In Spain and other countries have earned a chance for a better life in safety.
And as long as this is not possible in these countries, we have to take other means, by sending them to Germany to save their lives.
Of cause we are aware that the transport of dogs, modest amount of cats to Germany is no long term solution for the problem in the region. We have often seen the local authorities rejoicing over others misfortune after all the work of the animal protectors doesn’t cost them a cent. We represent that this institution will never dismiss the responsibility we have for these animals. That’s why we are making
Continuous presence in the media in the region and bring them to re-think. This way of cause we don’t make many friends, but so we can get a better long term for the animals. More over we are prepared to work together with the authorities, where ever possible. For example to help with a new Perrera building in Mahon on Menorca to produce improvement. Shame to say, a very hard and tough way, which has occupied us for years.
Cooperation partners in south and east Europe
The close contact with a lot of private often hopelessly overfilled animal protection initiatives in Portugal, Spain, Hungary and other countries are an essential basis in this work. For a long time international animal protection society Grenzenlos e.V. have obtained dogs from these people in these countries which have been sent to Germany to find at last a good home. And also information to people at home and abroad about the situation of the animal protectors and the acute problem which are emerging. We want to supply our solid help, for example castration in areas where large half wild cats populate, or supporting other animal protection projects.
